Test Questions About Outboard Motors

Start system test

For outboard motors that require electric start to start 12 times continuously, attention should be paid to the time limit. Each start time should not exceed 5s, and the interval between each start is 15s to avoid damage to the battery and starter motor.

Running-in of outboard motor

Newly built and overhauled outboard engines should be in accordance with the requirements of the instruction manual

Ask for a running-in test. The running-in should be carried out when the boat is empty and sailing. Generally, a 10h running-in operation is required. During the running-in period, full-speed navigation of more than 5 minutes is prohibited, but long-term idling operation is also not allowed. No mooring test is required for outboard motors. According to the characteristics of outboard motors, engine load tests in mooring tests should be avoided as much as possible. The sailing test should be carried out after the running-in of the outboard engine is completed, or combined with the running-in test. The load test must be carried out after the end of the running-in period.

Reversing the outboard motor

Through the mechanical clutch system, the outboard motor can realize instant clutching and reversing. The test should mainly check whether the installation and adjustment of the manipulator are in place, and whether there is a belt row phenomenon when the vehicle is empty. Inadequate adjustment of the reversing mechanism will cause slippage and wear of the clutch teeth and gears and damage to the gearbox. The engine should not stall after gear is engaged, and it should be able to run at a stable idling speed.

Speed determination of outboard motor boats

The speed measurement of the boat should be carried out after completing the following inspections: 1 The boat is fully loaded; 2 Confirm that the outboard motor has been run-in according to the instructions; 3 The idle speed of the outboard motor, fuel-air mixing ratio, and ignition timing are adjusted correctly; 4 According to Choose a propeller with a proper pitch for ship type, load, outboard motor model, etc., so that the engine speed of the outboard motor is within the rated range when the outboard motor is operating at full throttle; 5 by adjusting the ship's center of gravity and load distribution, the trim angle of the outboard motor and the balance plate Position, adjust the navigation state of the boat to the best condition.

Rotation and steering test of small boat

The ship should conduct a full steering test. In the case of full rudder, gradually increase the engine speed until the ship's heel angle is 12°, and record this speed in the certificate. The test should be carried out at least 3 times on each side. There is no specific requirement for the rotation test, it can be carried out with reference to the full rudder test, and the rotation of the ship is recorded at a certain engine speed.

Diameter and heel angle. During the test, care should be taken to control the speed of the outboard motor so that the ship’s heel angle is less than 12°, and to avoid the phenomenon of flying out of the outboard motor propeller and sudden increase in engine speed due to the ship’s heeling.
